Why South Jersey Homeowners Choose Us for Hardscaping & Outdoor Living

One Contractor, One Crew, One Build

Most outdoor living projects get pieced together by a mason, a plumber, an electrician, a lighting company, and a general contractor who subcontracts everything. We handle the concrete, stone, masonry, and finishing ourselves — and coordinate the licensed trades directly. You deal with one team from start to finish.

43+ Years Building in South Jersey

We understand the soil conditions, frost lines, drainage patterns, and permitting requirements across Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, and Atlantic counties. Every outdoor living feature we build is engineered for South Jersey's freeze-thaw cycles — not guessed at from a YouTube tutorial.

Design-Build Under One Roof

We don't hand you a plan and disappear. We design your outdoor living space during the consultation, refine it with you until it's exactly right, and then our crew builds it. Changes happen in real time with the people actually doing the work — no miscommunication between designers and builders.

We Build the Foundation Too

Unlike landscape contractors who build outdoor kitchens on top of whatever surface already exists, we pour the foundation, build the patio, construct the features, and install the lighting. Controlling every layer from the base up means everything is structurally integrated — not just sitting on top.

Honest Pricing, No Surprises

Outdoor living projects can be vague — "somewhere between $15K and $40K" doesn't help you plan. We provide a detailed, written scope of work with firm pricing before we start. Every feature, every material, every finish is specified. The price you agree to is the price you pay.

Licensed, Insured & Code-Compliant

Outdoor kitchens with gas and electric, fire features, and pergolas all have code requirements. We pull permits when required, coordinate inspections, and build to local building standards. NJ License #13VH00144300. Full liability and workers' comp coverage.

Our Hardscaping & Outdoor Living Project Process

Every outdoor living build follows a proven process refined over 43+ years and 2,167+ completed projects.

1

Free On-Site Design Consultation

We visit your property, walk the space, take measurements, and listen to how you want to use your backyard. We'll discuss layout options, materials, features, and budget — then give you an honest assessment of what's realistic for your space and goals. No pressure, no obligation.

2

Design & Material Selection

We refine the layout, select materials (stone, concrete patterns, countertop surfaces, lighting fixtures), and finalize the feature list. You'll see physical samples of everything before we start. Try our interactive project builder to explore patterns and colors.

3

Permits & Utility Coordination

We handle permit applications for structures, gas lines, and electrical. We coordinate with licensed plumbers and electricians to schedule rough-ins that align with our construction timeline. Everything is inspected and approved before we proceed.

4

Site Prep & Foundation

Demolition, excavation, grading for drainage, compacted stone base, and concrete footings for all structural elements. This is where most contractors cut corners — and where problems show up two years later. We don't skip steps.

5

Construction & Feature Installation

Patio pour or paver installation, kitchen island construction, fire feature build, pergola erection, water feature stonework — everything goes in during this phase. Our crew handles all masonry, concrete, and stone work. Utility trades come in for gas, electrical, and plumbing connections at the right stages.

6

Lighting, Finishing & Walk-Through

Lighting fixtures are installed and aimed, countertops are finished, sealers are applied, and every detail is checked. We clean the entire site and do a final walk-through with you to make sure everything meets your expectations — down to the last fixture and joint.

Hardscaping & Outdoor Living FAQ

Outdoor kitchens in South Jersey typically range from $8,000 to $35,000+ depending on size, materials, and features. A basic grill island with stone veneer and concrete countertop starts around $8,000–$12,000. Mid-range builds with a grill, mini fridge, and sink run $15,000–$22,000. Full luxury kitchens with pizza ovens, multiple cooking stations, and bar seating can reach $30,000+. We provide free on-site estimates with exact pricing for your specific layout and feature list.

For South Jersey's climate with freeze-thaw cycles, the best outdoor kitchen construction uses a concrete block core with natural or manufactured stone veneer exterior and poured concrete or granite countertops. This combination handles temperature swings, moisture, and UV exposure better than alternatives. We build all our kitchen islands on reinforced concrete footings with proper drainage to prevent frost heave and settling.

Permit requirements vary by municipality in South Jersey. Most towns require a building permit for outdoor kitchens that include gas lines, electrical, or plumbing. Gas-fired fire pits and fireplaces typically require a permit and must meet setback requirements from structures and property lines. Wood-burning fire pits may be subject to local burn ordinances. We handle the permit process for you and build everything to local code standards.

Timeline depends on scope. A standalone fire pit takes 2–3 days. An outdoor kitchen island takes 1–2 weeks. A full backyard transformation with patio, kitchen, fire feature, pergola, and lighting typically takes 3–5 weeks. Weather and permit timelines can affect the schedule. We provide a detailed project timeline during your design consultation so you know exactly what to expect.

In many cases, yes. If your existing patio is structurally sound — proper thickness, good base, no major cracking or settling — we can build an outdoor kitchen directly on it. We'll assess the condition during your free consultation. If the existing patio can't support the additional weight, we may need to pour a reinforced pad in the kitchen area. We can also extend an existing patio to accommodate the kitchen layout.

We install professional-grade TruScape LED landscape lighting systems. These include path lights, step lights, accent uplights for trees and architecture, wall wash lights, hardscape lights built into seat walls and columns, and underwater pond lights. All fixtures are low-voltage LED with smart controls so you can adjust brightness, set timers, and control zones from your phone. We design the lighting layout during the project planning phase so wiring is concealed during construction.

We coordinate all gas, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins as part of our outdoor kitchen builds. We work with licensed, insured subcontractors for gas line installation and electrical connections, and we schedule their work to align with our construction timeline. All utility work is inspected and permitted. The kitchen structure, countertops, veneer, and finishing are all completed by our own crew.

The ideal building season runs from April through November. Concrete work needs temperatures above 50°F, and masonry mortar sets best in moderate conditions. Spring is our busiest booking season — most homeowners who want their outdoor living space ready for summer entertaining should get estimates in February or March to secure a spot on our schedule. We can do some elements like pergola installation and lighting in cooler weather.

Our Hardscaping & Outdoor Living Services in Detail

Patrick Breen Masonry & Concrete doesn't just pour concrete — we build complete outdoor living environments. Since 1983, we've been designing and constructing outdoor kitchens, fire pits, fireplaces, pergolas, water features, and landscape lighting for homeowners across South Jersey. What started as a concrete and masonry operation out of Mullica Hill has grown into a full-service outdoor living contractor, and this is the work we're most passionate about — transforming backyards into spaces families actually live in.

Every outdoor living project we build is designed around how you want to use your space. We combine concrete, stone, wood, and lighting into a single cohesive build — so your outdoor kitchen flows into your patio, your fire pit anchors the seating area, your pergola provides shade where you need it, and your lighting makes it all usable after dark. We handle the full scope, from initial design through final detail, with our own crew on site every day.

Whether you're looking for a standalone fire pit to anchor your existing patio or a full backyard transformation with a kitchen, pergola, water feature, and lighting, we've been building exactly these spaces for over four decades. Homeowners from Cherry Hill to Swedesboro to Marlton trust us to bring their outdoor living visions to life — on time, on budget, and built to last.

Paver Patios & Hardscaping

Premium paver installations using Techo-Bloc, Belgard, and Marmiro Stone products. We build paver patios, driveways, walkways, and full hardscape environments designed as the foundation of your outdoor living space. Every paver installation includes full excavation, compacted aggregate base, leveling sand, polymeric sand joints, and soldier course borders. We handle complex multi-level patios, curved designs, inlays, and seamless transitions between paver areas, pool decks, and outdoor kitchens.

Pool Decks & Coping

Stamped concrete and paver pool decks are our second most-requested project. We install slip-resistant, cool-to-the-touch surfaces with patterns and colors that complement your pool coping and landscape. Options include bullnose coping integration, expansion joint design for pool-adjacent pours, and light-colored finishes that reflect heat instead of absorbing it. We also build pool deck surrounds that tie into outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and seating areas for a complete poolside living environment.

Outdoor Kitchens & Grill Islands

Fully custom outdoor kitchens built on reinforced concrete footings with concrete block cores, natural or manufactured stone veneer, and poured concrete or granite countertops. We accommodate built-in grills, pizza ovens, refrigerators, sinks, and bar seating — all designed around your cooking style and entertainment needs. Gas, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins are coordinated as part of the build.

Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces

Wood-burning and gas fire pits built into your patio design, plus full outdoor fireplaces with mantels and seating walls. Choose from natural stone, stamped concrete, manufactured stone veneer, or matching paver construction. Gas fire pits include hidden valve access and are plumbed for clean, instant ignition. Every fire feature is built to code with proper clearances and venting.

Trex Composite Decks

Deck installations featuring Trex Enhance and Trex Naturals composite decking — the beauty of wood without the maintenance. Composite decking resists fading, staining, splintering, and rot, making it perfect for South Jersey's four seasons. We build multi-level platforms, seamless transitions from stamped concrete patios, and integrated outdoor lighting and railings. Every deck is anchored to proper footings and built to local code.

Water Features & Waterfalls

Custom-built waterfalls, cascading rock features, bubbling boulders, pondless waterfall systems, and decorative ponds with recirculating pumps. We use natural stone and work with your existing grade to create features that look like they've always been part of your landscape. All water features include accessible pump vaults for easy maintenance and winterization.

Outdoor Landscape Lighting

Professional-grade TruScape LED lighting systems designed and installed as part of your outdoor living build — or added to existing spaces. We install path lights, step lights, hardscape lights built into seat walls and columns, tree uplights, wall wash lights, and underwater pond lights. All low-voltage LED with smart controls for scheduling, dimming, and zone control from your phone.

Complete Backyard Transformations

Full-scope outdoor living builds that combine a stamped concrete or paver patio with an outdoor kitchen, fire feature, pergola, lighting, and water features into a single cohesive environment. One contractor, one crew, one vision. No coordinating between five different companies. We design and build the entire space from the ground up.
